Hannah Maybank has shown regularly at Gimpel Fils since 2002 and this exhibition is the recapitulation of a decade's work. She uses the flora that surrounds us to portray an expression of time and mortality through a painted process. Her manner of depicting this shows much variety.

From her earliest days, Maybank has used acrylic paint with latex in carefully layered single colours, to build up a relief on the canvas surface. The result, like a carved frieze, is a surface, which allows for delicate shadows to enhance the image. The relief areas are either left intact or peeled away to reveal an underlying colour which otherwise remains hidden. The contrast between the relatively tough nature of latex and an implied fragility, unmasked in a tear, sums up the captivating manner in which the artist uses this most unusual of paint surfaces.

When Hannah Maybank turned to paper and ink, she recreated her carefully detailed studies of trees as jet-black silhouettes. Maybank used a slightly unorthodox shellac ink, to obtain the deepest black image, set against a pure white background. More recently she has begun to tackle watercolour and graphite to paint delicate flower images, leaving some areas densely painted and others finely outlined. In these, as in all her earlier work, Maybank sets up a contrast between full and empty spaces, balancing quiet with noise, solidity with confusion. There is beauty in fragility, in impermanence.

Hannah Maybank has been commissioned to produce new work for this year's Wirksworth Festival: 6- 22 September, along with Rachael Champion, Emily Speed and Johannes Vogl. She will also be exhibiting in the group show 'Under The Greenwood-Picturing The British Tree' at The St Barbe Museum and Art Gallery, Lymington: 12th October-23rd November.

Wirksworth Festival 2013 - 6th - 22nd September - Featuring commissions by Hannah Maybank, Rachael Champion, Emily Speed and Johannes Vogl

Wirksworth festival is an exciting annual event that offers sixteen days of contemporary visual art and performance in the unique rural town of Wirksworth.
Wirksworth Festival has clearly established itself as a key event in the East Midlands cultural calendar.

Curator Rose Lejeune has commissioned four artists to create major new works for the 2013 Wirksworth Festival. They are Rachael Champion, Johannes Vogl, Emily Speed, and Hannah Maybank. In addition the Visual Arts programme will feature new works by Eddy Dreadnaught, Sally Lemsford & Sally Newham, Ella Hurman, Olivia Punnett, Tim Shore, Katherine Vaughan & Greg Storrar.

The 2013 Programme, explores the town as dynamic and alive; a meeting point of architecture, people, and time changing and reinventing itself through cycles of growth and decay - the literal natural flow of germination, flowering, rotting and decay; the ways in which landscape changes through long geological movement and shorter cycle interventions by people, buildings and industries.
Using an eclectic range of media from installation, painting to video and performance, the commissions all will have some poetic, architectural or organic relationship with Wirksworth.   The middle weekend of the Festival, 14 and 15th September, will focus on the visual art commissions and provide an opportunity to investigate the intersection between the major commissions and the town itself.

The exhibition offers artists from all stages of development a chance to exhibit alongside unexpected juxtapositions with an added bonus of cash prizes.

London Buddhist Centre's Shrine Room given a fresh coat of Lascaux Paint

The guys at the London Buddhist Centre here in East London have been busy decorating their shrine room, and have put Lascaux Studio acrylic to good use to deliver a bright new look.
